چکیده

Idiopathic expansion of a paranasal sinus containing air and without an associated mass has been termed pneumosinus dilatans [1] . This rare disorder has been known to occur in all the paranasal sinuses, but it most commonly affects the frontal sinus. Clinical symptoms include pain , visual loss, proptosis, galactorrhea, and hypopituitarism [2-4]. Proposed mechanisms of origin include developmental, inflammatory, and obstructive. We present a 17 -year-old girl with pneumosinus dilatans of the left ethmoidal sinus. Previous CT studies, obtained 3 months prior to evaluation at our institution, demonstrated an expansile soft-tissue mass in the same lett ethmoidal sinus. Interim history included a single episode of massive rhinorrhea. We hypothesize that spontaneous drainage of a mucocele was the causative agent in our case of pneumosinus dilatans and represents a plausible mechanism of origin tor this otherwise idiopathic disorder.

Spontaneous pneumocephalus caused by the association of pneumosinus dilatans and meningioma. Case illustration.

Pneumosinus dilatans (PSD) refers to an abnormally enlarged, air-filled paranasal sinus without radiological evidence of localized bone destruction, hyperostosis, or mucous membrane thickening. This disorder has been associated with meningioma, especially optic nerve sheath meningioma, but its pathophysiology remains unclear. Spontaneous pneumocephalus is an exceptional presentation of PSD and,...

OBJECTIVE To report 3 cases of pneumosinus dilatans of the sphenoid sinus associated with visual loss. MATERIALS AND METHODS Retrospective case series describing history of visual loss, visual examination, visual field deficits, and radiologic imaging. RESULTS Three patients developed visual loss associated with pneumosinus dilatans of the sphenoid sinus. CONCLUSIONS Pneumosinus dilatans ...

Pneumosinus dilatans: rare cause of slowly changing frontal contours.

UNLABELLED Frontal pneumosinus dilatans is a rare entity that is documented only by a few reports. It is an abnormal expansion of the aerated frontal sinus, with sinus walls of normal thickness. The expansion of the bone may be generalized or focal. It is not only an aesthetic problem but may also have functional consequences. We herein present the case of a 23-year-old woman who had been refer...

Pneumosinus dilatans of the sphenoid sinus.

Four cases of pneumosinus dilatans of the sphenoid sinus are reported, supplementing the eight cases previously reported in the literature. This rare entity is characterized by expansion of a paranasal sinus that contains only air. In one patient, severe visual loss due to compression of the optic canal by the adjacent enlarged sinus was seen. Galactorrhea occurred in one patient, and three of ...

Pneumosinus dilatans frontalis: a case report.

Deformity of the forehead is usually the first clinical presentation of the abnormally large frontal sinus caused by pneumosinus dilatans. We report the diagnosis and surgical treatment of a case. The type of osteotomy we describe is recommended as a method of surgical treatment for this condition when the aesthetic problem is the major complaint.
